Colonial Knob and Porirua Scenic Reserve
HighlightsThe views from Colonial Knob itself both over the suburbs and out towards the coast on the other side are nothing short of spectacular.
AccessThe main carpark is off Broken Hill road just before you start up the hill towards the tip. Also the Elsen Camp carpark in Raha Street, Waiho Terrace and Rangituhi Crescent.
Elsdon Camp to the junction with Colonial Knob track
Elsdon Camp is off Raihi Street
This relatively steep track rises sharply through a stream valley to link with the road leading to Colonial Knob. The bush, like Porirua Scenic Reserve, is first rate and the track is well built with ladders over some of the more difficult sections. The top of the track comes out to farmland where you get a good view of where you've come from.
Porirua Scenic Reserve
Rangituhi Cres is the northern most entrance with Waiho Terace and Camp Elsdon to the south
These tracks will come as a surprise to some, they're well maintained and give access to some of the best bush in this part of Wellington. The tracks themselves aren't too challenging but are easy to follow and the open bush makes the trip worthwhile.
Raihi Rd to Colonial Knob
The track starts at Raihi Rd however you can also access Colonial Knob via Broken Hill
This 4wd gravel and clay road provides access to Colonial Knob and the ridge above Elsdon. While it's quite long it isn't too bad as the gradient is reasonably friendly and the views of Porirua and Mana Island will keep you going higher for more. A great bike trip back down that's surprising short.
